More Zomato & Swiggy Orders Without Deep Discounts: A Restaurant's Guide

Zomato and Swiggy can be a quarter of a restaurant's revenue — and, run carelessly, all of its margin. The discount treadmill is real: deep offers buy volume, volume builds dependence, dependence eats profit. But the restaurants that win on aggregators long-term win on the listing, not the discount. Here's what actually moves delivery orders.

Treat your listing like a storefront

Your aggregator page is a shop window scrolled past in two seconds. Professional-looking photos on every top dish (a phone and daylight are enough), accurate prep times, complete menu categories and zero out-of-stock items during peak hours. Listings with complete photos consistently out-order sparse ones at the same price point.

Structure the menu for scrollers

Delivery menus are browsed, not read. Put bestsellers and high-margin combos in the first screen, name dishes searchably ("Chicken Biryani — Hyderabadi, serves 2" not "Chef's Special #3"), and build combos around your stars — combos raise average order value without touching prices.

Defend your rating like revenue

Delivery ranking is heavily rating-driven. The kitchen controls most of it: accurate prep times beat fast-but-late promises, sturdy packaging beats leaky trays, and getting the order right beats everything. Respond to every review, especially the bad ones — platform algorithms and future customers both notice.

Packaging is marketing: a sealed, tidy, well-labelled package with a thank-you note is the only physical touchpoint delivery customers have with your brand. It's also the difference between 4.1 and 4.5.

Use platform ads surgically

Aggregator ads work when targeted at your proven sellers during peak windows (7–10pm), not spread thin across the menu all day. Start small, measure cost per order against your margin per order, and pause anything that doesn't pay for itself within two weeks.

Discount shallow and rare, not deep and always

Permanent 50%-off trains customers to never pay full price and attracts the least loyal segment. If you must discount, use shallow, time-boxed offers on weekday lulls, or free add-ons (a drink, a dessert) that cost you less than their perceived value. Your dine-in brand should never depend on your delivery discounts.

Pull delivery customers into your own channels

The aggregator owns the customer relationship — unless you claim it. A card in every package: "Order direct on WhatsApp next time — 10% off and a free dessert." Even converting 5% of delivery customers to direct orders meaningfully improves margin and builds a list no platform can take away.

Know your real numbers

Commission, packaging, ads and discounts stack up fast. Compute your true margin per delivery order monthly. Some restaurants discover certain dishes lose money on delivery — those are dishes to reprice, bundle or remove from the delivery menu entirely.

Why is my restaurant not visible on delivery apps?
